Sunday 26th February 2012 at 4pm String quartets by Musicworks students with their coach Robert Max Programme Beethoven String Quartet in E flat, op.74 "the Harp" The Celan Quartet: Mathilde Milwidsky Timothy Crawford Timothy Ridout Tim Posner Verdi String Quartet in E minor Timothy Crawford Mathilde Midwilsky Clara Hilger Robert Max The collection will be in aid of the Jacob Barnes Memorial Scholarship. Jacob Barnes attended his first MusicWorks course in 2005 and such was his generous, inspiring and hilariously entertaining nature that the courses quickly became almost unimaginable without him. He was an extremely gifted pianist and a musician of immense depth. His insatiable appetite for music of all kinds was a huge gift to everyone - his fearless attitude to diving into a dense Russian score enabled many string players to get to know pieces they would be lucky ever to find anyone able to play. But he was just as happy playing the simplest movement of something with the youngest on the course to introduce them very gently to the joys of chamber music. Jacob's death, from leukaemia, leaves a big hole in the lives of everyone who knew him and we wanted to honour having known him by creating a scholarship in his name. This will enable a young pianist to come on the courses each year. The scholarship will be launched at a special MusicWorks family concert in Lewes in January 2012. Donations towards the scholarship fund will be very gratefully received. Sunday 2nd May 2010 at 3pm Classical music from two very different traditions Programme Bach's Goldberg Variations played on the Harpsichord by Alastair Ross Classical Middle Eastern Music played by the Oxford Maqam Alastair has worked for twenty five years as a harpsichordist and organist based in London. He has appeared as soloist with many London orchestras, in the concert hall, for the BBC and on record. In the summer of 2009 he played a Handel Organ Concerto in the Royal Albert Hall Proms. Oxford Maqam is led by Tarik Bashir (vocals and 'oud). Tarik is an active member of the Oxford music scene and also works with Jazz, Country and Ragtime artists. Martin Stokes (qanun) is currently an Oxford University Lecturer and fellow of St John's College. He has been working in middle eastern music for the past 20 years. Oxford Maqam also comprise Giles Lewin (violin) and Dan Glaisbrook (percussion). This is a special concert in memory of Benny May. Benny (Benedict) May died in an accident at home aged 12 on May 10th 2007. Ali Ross and Martin Stokes (who plays in the Oxford Maqam) are close friends of the May family (as are the Behrmans) and wanted to play something in memory of Benny for the family. Benny had a very wide and developed taste in music and so the range of this concert is appropriate. Neil and Lilli May (Benny's parents) have decided to use this concert also to raise funds for the work of Jenni Thomas OBE, founder of the Child Bereavement Charity and now an independent bereavement counsellor, trainer and pioneer, working through the Angus Lawson Memorial Trust (ALMT). Jenni specialises in child bereavement and was very important to Neil, Lilli and family after Benny's death in helping all of them to face and understand their grief as a natural process, and as giving meaning to life rather than taking it away. see Angus Lawson Memorial Trust Sunday 18th April 2010 at 4pm The Arethusa Ensemble plays music for wind instruments Programme Debussy - Prelude a l'apres-midi d'un faune (arranged for flute, clarinet and piano) Mozart - Divertimento K229 no 1 (oboe, clarinet, bassoon) Poulenc - Sonata for flute and piano (2nd movement only) Martinu - Sextet (flute, oboe, clarinet, 2 bassoons and piano) Dvorak - Slavonic Dances, opus 72 nos. 5 & 1 (piano four hands) The charity collection will be for Action Against Hunger: http://www.actionagainsthunger.org/.
